Trying to decide if Reddit is safe? The answer is yes. Reddit is a legit, trustworthy, and popular forum/social media site with a strong tech community. Whether you use it to explore Subreddits (niche communities), post content, connect with others, or find crowdsourced answers to common questions, Reddit has that authentic “people” vibe.
However, that same online community vibe that makes the platform appealing is leveraged by scammers in countless Reddit scams. Scams on Reddit vary from malicious direct messages to marketplace, crypto, romance, and fake moderator scams. Let’s dive in.
Is Reddit safe?
Not only is Reddit safe, but it is one of the most popular legit community forums online. Reddit is US-based and trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol RDDT. Reddit has been online since 2005, and its co-founder, Steve Huffman, is still deeply involved in the company, working as the company’s CEO.
While active user figures vary, according to several sites, Reddit has over 1.48 billion active users.
While Reddit is safe to use, the main risks come from other scammers posing as Reddit users or using the platform anonymously, not the platform itself.
To mitigate the risk of phishing, malware, and social engineering, Reddit uses Google’s Web Risk API. The tech cross-references content posted on Reddit with an extensive database of unsafe URLs. Additionally, the platform has a moderation system, a team of experts, and users themselves reporting scams and flagging scams on Subreddits like r/Scams or r/Scammers.
According to the latest Reddit Transparency Report, 2.66% of 6 billion pieces of content were removed by automated systems, mods, and admins for being spam or scams. In other words, scams are present on the platform.
Is Reddit safe for kids and teens?
From scammers to spam to inappropriate content, Reddit is not considered safe for kids and teens. Reddit is open to anyone. Users can navigate Reddit anonymously, and even when registered, the platform does not check for government-issued IDs.
Reddit restricts users under the age of 13. So, if you’re wondering if Reddit is safe for 10- or 12-year-olds, a child that age shouldn’t even be opening an account on the platform.
7 ways to recognize a Reddit scam
There are a number of ways to flag scams on Reddit. First, be on the lookout for unsolicited direct messages (DMs). Most of the scams will start when the scammers send you a message containing a lure and a call to action.
Scammers may lure you with fake opportunities or try to strong-arm you with claims of nonexistent emergencies. Keep in mind that this applies not only to DMs on Reddit but to emails and messages sent via other channels, so double-check all content and links.
Thanks to the rise of AI, phishing messages and fake sites have become more difficult to spot. This is where a Scam Detector comes in handy.

The Moonlock security app will not only check your Mac for malware, but it also comes with a built-in Scam Detector that can analyze the content of a message and determine the likelihood that the message is associated with a scam.
To check a Reddit message for a scam using the Scam Detector:
- Try the Moonlock app for free with a 7-day trial.
- Download the app.
- Click on the Scam Detector (Venetian mask icon) on the left-hand menu.
- Copy and paste the message you want to check in the Scam Detector’s box.
- The Scam Detector will tell you if the message is a Scam or if it’s safe, and why.

The Moonlock app also comes with real-time protection, a Malware Scanner, and a VPN for safe browsing. Plus, the app can scan your Mac security settings and guide you on how to increase your Mac’s protection. And, through Security Advisor, Moonlock will help you build cybersecurity awareness with simple tips that go a long way.

Let’s look at other common red flags on Reddit:
- Fake urgency: Scammers instill a fake sense of urgency in their messages to cloud your mind and get you to take specific action. A good tip is to pause for at least 5 seconds before responding to a message that puts you on edge.
- “Let’s talk off Reddit”: Scammers will try to get you off of Reddit and onto channels like Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp, or email. They do this to avoid automated and human security checks on the platform that can flag suspicious activity, especially links or requests for payments.
- Money talks: Any user, comment, thread, response, or message you get that involves, in any way, some form of payment should be an immediate red flag. Watch out for fake crypto giveaways, fake NFT drops, new fake tokens, Venmo/PayPal/Zelle requests, and the like.
- Scammers who impersonate Reddit: One of the most trending scams on Reddit is the fake moderator. This is a type of impersonation scam in which the bad actors try to trick you by posing as Reddit moderators or the moderators of a SubReddit.
- “Click here to log in to your account”: Scammers aren’t just good at social engineering. They also use AI to create highly convincing large-scale fake login pages. These pages might impersonate Reddit or other popular sites. Once you type your credentials on these pages, they are automatically stolen.
- New accounts with high karma: “Karma” on Reddit accounts refers to community review points. Accounts with high karma have a good reputation, and those with low karma have let users down. When you see an account with high karma, yet the account is new, has little to no activity, and only posts on one topic, this is a red flag. It’s a hint that the account has been taken over by a scammer or created using bots.
- Too good to be true: Everyone likes discounts, good job offers, and great deals. However, if you receive an offer that seems “too good to be true,” it’s probably a scam. Watch out for these.
The 8 most common scams on Reddit in 2026
Now that we’ve covered the red flags you should be on the lookout for, let’s check out the most common scams on Reddit in 2026.
Fake moderator scam
We briefly covered this above, but this trending trick is the most Reddit-specific scam out there. In this scam, scammers impersonate Reddit moderators or “mods” via private DM. They will send you a fake verification link and use it to take over your account. Again, they do this by creating fake, cloned, credentials-grabbing Reddit sites.
To stay safe from a fake Reddit moderator scam:
- Check the Subreddit sidebar for the mod’s username.
- Never click on “verification” links.
- Know that mods never ask for money.
- Keep in mind that mods use Modmail and will never send you private DMs.
Reddit phishing or private message scams using AI
You might get a fake DM on Reddit or a fake email from scammers. The email or DM may speak of a fake event, give you a link, or claim that your account needs to be verified. Additionally, watch out for fake giveaway emails or DMs. Red flags include urgency, external domain links, and requests for login credentials.
Crypto and investment scams
We already talked about “too good to be true” scams. Crypto and investment scams are included in this category. There are a lot of crypto scams, including pump-and-dump crypto and pig butchering. Pig butchering is a personalized, long-term scam targeting high-value users. In this scam, users are convinced to invest or wire transfer funds and are directed to a fake, highly convincing trading platform that shows fabricated gains but blocks withdrawals.
You will also see scams like “I’ll double your Bitcoin,” fake new tokens, exclusive access to fake coins, and NFTs scams. You can connect with the Reddit community on crypto scams at r/CryptoScams.
Catfishing and romance scams
Catfishing or romance scams, targeting all types of users from the elderly to executives, are among the nastiest and psychologically damaging scams to experience. In romance scams, scammers create fake personas and seduce victims by playing a long-term con that has been adapted to the digital world.
The FBI has been warning about this type of scam for years, explaining that scammers might even propose marriage and “make plans to meet in person, but that will never happen.”
Scammers will often start the conversation on Reddit and try to convince you to move to other platforms. It’s important to note that scammers using this technique have scripts and usually operate from abroad in industrialized scamming centers or through independent networks, making it challenging for law enforcement to shut down these operations and even more difficult to recover your funds.
If you have fallen for this type of scam and have lost money, you may be prone to follow-up scams. Scammers will sometimes reach out to offer a “service” to recover your stolen funds, which is also a scam. In fact, it may be perpetrated by the same scammer operation that conned you in the first place.
AI allows romance and catfish scammers to create highly convincing fake personas. Try doing a reverse image search on Google Images (copy and paste or upload the photo) to check if the profile image is a deepfake.
Buy-and-sell marketplace scams
Reddit is not a marketplace. Consequently, Reddit has no buyer/seller protections, no safe payment tech, no escrow system, and none of the other security systems that safe online marketplaces have. Nevertheless, scammers will use top Subreddits like r/hardwareswap, r/GameSale, and r/forhire to offer products that they never ship. Or they may claim that funds arrived incomplete by using, for example, fake PayPal screenshots.
Tip? Check Reddit’s Universal Scammer List before any transaction. You can search for the Reddit username of the user you are trying to verify. Note that even if the site clears the username, that does not mean it is 100% safe.
Also, never use Zelle or Venmo for purchases associated with Reddit; these payment apps do not have the level of security guardrails used by apps like PayPal do, and scammers are very familiar with the loopholes. Your safest bet is to not buy anything through Reddit at all.
Fake Subreddits
While scams might target users interested in many topics, blockchain, crypto, and investment scams are the most popular.
Investing, blockchain, and Web3 are highly popular topics on Reddit, with millions of interested users. This high pool of users, combined with the lack of security measures of the platform, makes it an ideal hotspot for crypto Subreddit scams.
In fake Subreddit scams, scammers create lookalike communities, especially related to crypto/investing, and use bots and AI to create posts and boost engagement and reputation, luring users with fake promises. Once the content is online, scammers may push you toward fake platforms, DM you, or even direct you to sites where malware is hosted.
Check if the Subreddit was recently created, check the activity to spot generic bot trails, and trust your instincts when engaging with crypto and finance content. Again, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Malware links and fake Reddit sites
As mentioned, scammers frequently combine social engineering with malware. Fake Reddit accounts and Subreddits can be used to spread links to malicious downloads.
For example, in 2025, Malwarebytes identified a threat campaign in which Reddit users were targeted with AMOS, a popular macOS stealer, and Lumma, a Windows-targeting malware. In that campaign, they offered on Reddit “free lifetime access” to a cracked TradingView platform.
In another threat campaign that we covered on the Moonlock blog, over 1,000 fake Reddit and WeTransfer pages were used to distribute malware. Scammers might also create fake Reddit lookalike sites to steal your data and serve you malware.
Never download files from links on Reddit, as the problem with malware today is that it can breach Windows and Mac operating systems and the security tools that ship with your computer. The AMOS stealer, for example, can bypass Gatekeeper, your Mac’s built-in line of defense, by tricking you into installing the malware yourself using ClickFix instructions.
The Moonlock antivirus was built to catch what your Mac misses, and the app is constantly updated to identify new macOS malware and threats. In addition to real-time protection, the Moonlock app also comes with a Malware Scanner.

To check and remove malware from your Mac using Moonlock:
- Download Moonlock for free with a 7-day trial.
- Click on the second icon down on the left-hand menu (the sunglasses icon).
- Set your scan to Deep, Moderate, or Fast. (We recommend Deep for the first time you scan your Mac.)
- Wait for the scan to complete.
- The Moonlock app will tell you if it found malware or a threat, describe what makes it dangerous, and move it to Quarantine, where you can delete it from your computer.

Charity and assistance scams
Scammers also use Reddit to run charity and assistance scams. They will either open new Subreddits or post comments on popular ones. Preying on good intentions, they will create fake charity-related content and DMs, as well as target those who need assistance.
Job scams on Reddit
Fake job scams are not unique to Reddit, but they are especially common on Subreddits like r/forhire. You might get fake emails, fake personal assistants demanding pay upfront, or other creative scams. As a rule, no legitimate employer will ask you to send money or forward packages.
Why Reddit attracts so many scammers
Reddit is popular among scammers because it boasts a broad digital surface. It is a massive platform with billions of users and views. It also has some loopholes, like the lack of government-issued ID checks and anonymous user capabilities. Scammers use these features to their advantage. Additionally, the sheer volume of activity on the platform has Reddit security teams and automated checks playing catch-up.

How to avoid scams and stay safe on Reddit
Besides the simple advice we already covered, here are some other ways you can keep safe on Reddit:
- Take action if you notice suspicious activity. Besides blocking, reporting, and deleting scam messages, you can also change your Reddit password and enable MFA for stronger security.
- Turn up your Reddit Privacy Settings. Whether you are using your browser or the Reddit app, you can level up your security and Reddit privacy settings in your Account Settings. In Advanced Privacy Options, for example, you can disable “Show up in search results.” And in the Profile tab, you can switch off “Allow people to follow you.” You can also disable data tracking by turning off “Personalize ads based on information from our partners” and “Allow us to use your interaction with third-party websites.”
- Verify that a Reddit mod is the real thing. Real Reddit mods will have a green tag on the side of their name. Mods will also only contact you via Modmail, so if you get a DM, it’s not a real mod. Also, mods will never ask you for your personal data or for payments.
- Watch out for sensitive data requests. Be wary of any request on Reddit asking you for your data. Even your email address can be used by scammers for highly personalized phishing campaigns.
- Check suspicious emails or Reddit DMs. Moonlock has a built-in Scam Detector that can help you flag a scam in just a couple of clicks. Download the Moonlock app and copy and paste the email, message, or DM into the Scam Detector feature, and the app will tell you if it’s a scam and why. Check out and test-drive Moonlock for free for 7 days.

So, is Reddit safe to use? Like any other major online community or social media platform, Reddit is not free from common scams. And while some can be spotted a mile away, others can be sneaky and may use AI and malware to breach your computer. Fortunately, you can follow the advice in this report for a safe digital experience while interacting with your favorite communities on Reddit.
